CASP will be a website prototype for the innovative digital global library

On Tuesday 3 May, the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú (CASP) was announced as one of the prototype sites of the Global Disability Rights Library (GDRL) in a press conference held at CASP. Other three selected countries: Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zambia are also part of this worldwide project.

During this event, Dr. Liliana Mayo, General Director of CASP, Dr. Thomas Cook from the University of Iowa and Mr. Andrew Herscowitz, Deputy Director of USAID/Peru explained the importance of this Digital Library to our country.

It ‘s worth remembering that GDRL is an effort of the University of Iowa's WiderNet Project, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD).

The Digital Library that uses the eGranary, also known as “The Internet in a Box”, will provide information to organizations and individuals in developing countries that are willing to promote the rights of people with different abilities. The eGranary provides thousands of digital educational resources to institutions that do not have Internet access.

The aim of the GDRL is to provide a lot of information to organizations that serve people with disabilities in developing countries but lack adequate Internet access. People with different abilities living in communities without Internet access will be the primary recipients of the library in an electronic storage device. People around the world who have web access will be able to use the GDRL via the web.

Free–of Charge International Conference on Inclusion for People with Different Abilities into School

Objectives: To encourage regular school administrators, teachers, classmates and their parents to make inclusion into school easier for people with different abilities, or participate in this process.

Are we preparing people with Autism for life?

The XIX International Conference: “Are we preparing people with Autism for life?” which was led by Dr. Liliana Mayo, General Director and Founder of the Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru, took place on Saturday, April 2, 2011.

The event was broadcast live over the Internet from Kansas City through the Elluminate Live system, and it had a great attendance in each city connected to the conference. As a result, more than 1130 persons were trained in Peru and other countries.

21 cities in 14 departments of Peru took part in this event: Andahuaylas, Arequipa, Huamanga, Cajamarca, Caraz, Cerro de Pasco, Chiclayo, Chimbote, Cusco, Huánuco, Huaral, Ilo, Iquitos, Máncora, Moquegua, Paramonga, Sicuani, Sullana, Tacna and Lima (San Juan de Miraflores, San Miguel); and also 9 cities in other countries: Argentina (La Plata, Quilmes, Mar del Plata), Chile (Concepción), Colombia (Cartagena), Ecuador (El Fortín, Manta, Quito), México (Hidalgo, Lagunas, San Luis de Potosí), Guatemala, Panamá (Chiriqui), Spain (Barcelona) and the United States of America (Madison- Wisconsin).

We also gave a special welcome to the first time cities such as Ayacucho (Ayacucho), Chimbote (Ancash), Mar del Plata (Argentina), Concepción (Chile) and Cartagena (Colombia) that took part in this conference.

Reflecting on Autism Awareness

As a part of the “World Autism Awareness Day” celebrations that take place on April 2^nd, the Peruvian News Agency Andina interviewed Gloria Guerrero, CASP specialist.

Also, our student Juan Carlos Manchaca and his mother Ynés Mendieta told their stories, which are testimonies of life. Juan Carlos is a young man with autism who represented us at Illinois University and at the Center “El Valor” in Chicago (USA), in 2010.

CASP trains professionals and students in inclusive education

The Workshop: “Curricular adaptations in School Inclusion” took place in the Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru’s classrooms on April 1^st. It was aimed at regular and special education professionals, therapists and psychologists.

During the workshop, educational techniques were developed to prepare curricular adaptations according to the students’ abilities and needs.

It is important to remember that school inclusion is the total or partial participation of students with different abilities in regular school classes and activities. Likewise, curricular adaptations are modifications made to the school grade curriculum to facilitate the learning of students with different abilities.

CASP students will work at the Ministry of Justice

With the aim of creating an alliance that allows us to contribute to the development of the potentialities of people with different abilities, the Ministry of Justice (MINJUS in Spanish) and the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú (CASP) signed a collaboration agreement to include CASP students in MINJUS to do administrative tasks.

Prime Minister Rosario Fernandez and Rosa Oyama, Director of Projects and Research of CASP, were the signatories of this agreement that took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice.

Our Students started working at the Ministry of Health (MINSA)

Silvia Ochante, Martín Pérez, Roberto Salas and Gustavo Quispe, student workers of the Supported Employment Program at the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú, started working at the Ministry of Health on February 1st. Tasks such as putting codes on documents, filing them and other ones have been assigned to them. In this way they become the first young people with different abiilities who work for public institutions.

An agreement reached between CASP and MINSA in October 2010 made possible this important hiring. It is part of a plan for promoting inclusion for people with different abilities into the Ministry of Health, a policy the present administration strongly supports.

Dance contest winners to the beat of marinera

On Sunday, 30th of January, our student Pamela Sotomayor successfully participated in the 51º National Marinera Contest organized by the Club Libertad in Trujillo.

This traditional event took place in the bullring of this city. Children, adolescents, young people, adults, and old people, including those with different abilities participated in it. Participants holding handkerchiefs above their heads showed creativity and elegance in this beautiful national dance, receiving prolonged applauses from audience who brimmed over with enthusiasm.

Jose Mendoza and Pamela Sotomayor (CASP student), the couple numbered 243, won in the “De la Unidad” category of the national contest. They were the great winners among the eight couples that reached the final, out of a total of 23 dancers.
