Today, Tuesday August 20th, the Centro Ann Sullivan
del Perú (CASP) celebrates its 34 anniversary dedicated to the education of
people with different abilities (autism, Down syndrom, mental retardation and
cerebral palsy) and their families. Several institutional activities have been
prepared to celebrate this event, in which authorities of the San Miguel
district (where the center is located) teachers, parents, students, and the
community in general will take part.
Tomorrow, to promote our rich and varied gastronomy,
students and parents will participate in a gastronomic contest to be developed
in each classroom of CASP. Winners will receive a diploma and a surprise prize.
On Wednesday, August 21st, starting at 4 pm, students,
parents and CASP specialists will take part in a passacaglia, a walking parade
through the streets adjacent to the center. Street people and musical bands
will be part of this joyful and colorful parade.
Centro
Ann Sullivan del Perú (CASP)
Dr. Liliana Mayo, general director, founded CASP in the garage of her
parents at La Punta, Callao, on August 20th, 1979. It started with 8 students,
but at present it serves more than 450 students, 100 of which are employed in
real jobs, and another 70 are included in regular schools.
CASP is recognized worldwide for its contributions as a model center of
training, demonstration and research for people with different abilities and
their families. Its educational model has been implemented succesfully in
Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Spain, Panama and the Dominican Republic.
Not long ago, by the initiative of the First Ladies
of Panama and the Dominican Republican, Martha Linares and Cándida Montilla de
Medina and their respectives governments have adopted the CASP educational
system to be implemented at the Ann Sullivan Center of Panama CASPAN
(established last year) and at the Center of Integral Attention for Disability (CAID), which will be established at the end of this year.
